La Terza Team: Lorenzo de Amicis

We love spotlight our amazing La Terza team members! This week, learn more about the man who can repair just about any coffee machine you give him: Lorenzo de Amicis.

What is your role at La Terza?

Lorenzo is in charge of equipment and service for La Terza. He is our skillful machine maintenance guy. As he says it: “I repair stuff.” He is also a partial owner of the company.

Lorenzo handles equipment installation in new coffee shops, repairs any equipment that may have problems, and restores espresso machines to give them a second life. The restoration process includes taking the machines completely apart down to every bolt, then repainting and fixing everything fromthe ground up. He says, “My goal is to restore the machines to a level that is better than its quality when it first came off the factory floor.”

Tell us about yourself. What is your background? Where did you grow up?

Lorenzo was born and grew up in Belgium, surrounded by an Italian family. He moved to Cincinnati when he was twelve years old. He remarks, “Espresso is a big deal in my life and in my family; I have been drinking it since I was in my teens.”

He went to the University of Cincinnati and studied information technology and network administration. Post-college, he owned his own car shop, where he built 1960’s race cars. During that time, he took a year off work to rock climb around the United States, Europe and Asia. After returning home, he worked with his father at his engineering consulting company.

Lorenzo had lots of downtime between projects with the engineering company, which prompted him to start looking for a part time job. He says, “La Terza was the first coffee that I really liked in Cincinnati,” and our espresso was the the first he liked in the United States! While studying at UC, he made going to Rohs Street Cafe, a coffee shop in Clifton that served La Terza coffee at the time, a regular habit. He worked various side jobs for the company before eventually transitioning to full time and becoming a part owner of La Terza.

Why do you like working with La Terza?

Lorenzo exclaims, “It’s fun! It doesn’t feel like work to me. I get to do what I love everyday.”

Furthermore, he says, “I feel like La Terza makes sure that everyone is doing what they love first and foremost rather than various jobs.” He values the small company feel and appreciates how well the La Terza team works together.

What is your favorite type of coffee?

“Espresso all the way. I never drink coffee. This is largely because I was raised on espresso. “I love that it’s super concentrated.”

What’s a fun fact about you?

Lorenzo is an avid rock climber. He also loves cooking, playing board games, and traveling. He also speaks Italian and French!
