Our relationship with La Terza customers is very important to us. Seeing familiar faces and knowing what your usual drink is has become a privilege and something we strive for. We are a Cincinnati company and we want people to feel like they can become part of our coffee family. This post features our primary owner, David Gaines, who is an awesome advisor and an even better person. He is so committed to your coffee experience and the welfare of farmers in other countries. Read on for our Q&A with David:
What is your role at La Terza?
I am the primary owner at La Terza, and my role is to guide the direction of the business. The funny part of my story is that I used to not like coffee! Chuck (La Terza’s Founder) and I met in college – he was the original owner and when he told me that he was starting a coffee roasting business, I declared, “That’s great, but I don’t like coffee!” He quickly gave me a cup of coffee that he had just roasted and brewed and to my surprise, I really enjoyed it! To this day, I still don’t like “bad” coffee, but thoroughly enjoy high quality coffee!
Tell me about yourself. What is your background? Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Cincinnati. As a kid, I was very active in Boy Scouts, eventually earning my Eagle Scout Award. This experience really was the groundwork for my Jack-of-all-Trades skill set, which I’ve used for many different aspects in business.
I’ve always enjoyed helping people and being creative to find solutions for complex problems. After all, business at its core is really about finding a solution to someone else’s problem. If you have a good solution for a problem, are able to solve the solution at a fair price, and are able to repeat it for other people with the same problem, then you have a foundation for a good business. Furthermore, if you can solve a problem with a product, while solving other, bigger problems around the globe while producing that product, you have the making of a social-impact business.
At La Terza, we are able to give people some of the best tasting coffee in Cincinnati and the region. We are also solving problems around the world by working closely with farmers, ensuring proper living wages and ultimately solving many additional problems that farmers face. This is the reason we work so hard to provide great coffee to our customers and shops. The better our coffee tastes and the more it sells, the deeper impact we can have with other coffee lovers and farmers. Everybody wins!
Why do you like working with La Terza?
We have a great team that works hard to produce a great product – all while making a difference in others’ lives.
What is your favorite type of coffee?
Such a hard question! My favorite right now would be Brazil Daterra Estate Sweet Blue – it has a great full flavor with good deep chocolate and spice notes.
What’s a fun fact about you?
My favorite outdoor activities are biking and whitewater kayaking!
Keep your eye out for David at our roasterie as well as the farmers markets! He is so full of knowledge and would love to share!
